Jesus does the unthinkable in today’s Gospel. He speaks to a leper. More than that, He reaches out and touches him. In the culture of the time, lepers were feared, avoided, and isolated. They lived on the margins of society. Yet Jesus sees beyond the disease. He sees a beloved son of the Father and responds with compassion: “I do will it. Be made clean.”
Jesus’ actions reveal both the heart of God and the way His disciples are called to live. The Lord desires to heal us of whatever separates us from Him—our sins, fears, wounds, and brokenness. At the same time, He teaches us to look beyond labels, appearances, and cultural expectations. Every person is made in the image and likeness of God and deserves to be treated with dignity, mercy, and love. When we see others through the eyes of Christ, compassion naturally replaces judgment, and love overcomes fear.
