God Is God, and I Am Not
The reading from Ezekiel presents an almost humorous situation. The prince of Tyre thinks himself a god. Yet the Lord reminds him rather pointedly: you are a man, not a god.
We may not claim to be gods, but we can sometimes live as though we are. Human beings accomplish remarkable things. We cure diseases, build cities, explore space, and harness the forces of nature. Yet our abilities and understanding remain limited. We can sometimes delay death, but we cannot conquer it. We cannot save ourselves.
That is precisely the point Jesus makes in the Gospel. When the disciples ask, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus responds: “For men this is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”
“God is God, and I am not” is an important admission. It is not defeat but humility—and humility opens the heart to trust. We do not have to save ourselves. We need only place ourselves in the hands of the One who can.
