Thoughts on God

Thoughts on God: God Dwells Within You

There are certain truths of our faith that are so familiar we no longer hear how extraordinary they really are.

This Sunday, St. Paul offers one of those truths:

“The Spirit of God dwells in you.” (Romans 8:9)

Pause for a moment and let those words sink in.

The God who created the universe, who spoke creation into existence, who parted the Red Sea, who raised Jesus from the dead, has chosen to make His dwelling within us. Through Baptism and strengthened in Confirmation, we become temples of the Holy Spirit. We do not simply follow Christ from a distance; His very life is at work within us.

That raises an important question.

Do I really believe that?

Most of us would immediately answer, “Of course.” Yet our lives often tell a different story.

We become consumed by work, responsibilities, finances, family concerns, and the endless stream of news and distractions that compete for our attention. We spend so much time focused on what is happening around us that we rarely pause to remember what is happening within us.

God is already there.

Perhaps this is why so many people find themselves restless. We search for peace in success, possessions, entertainment, or even well-deserved vacations. While these things have their place, they cannot satisfy the deepest longing of the human heart.

As St. Augustine famously wrote, “Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

We were made for joy. We were made for communion. We were made for God.

The rest that Jesus promises in the Gospel is not merely the absence of work or stress. It is the peace that comes from living in communion with the One who loves us completely. It is discovering that our deepest identity is not found in what we accomplish but in whose we are.

If God truly dwells within us, then nurturing that relationship becomes the most important part of every day.

Prayer is no longer simply another task to complete; it is spending time with the Divine Guest who already lives within us. Reading Sacred Scripture becomes listening to His voice. The Eucharist becomes an intimate encounter with the One who continually gives Himself to us. The Sacrament of Reconciliation allows Christ to heal what sin has damaged and restore His life within us.

None of these are burdens. They are gifts.

They are the ordinary ways God deepens the extraordinary gift He has already given us—His own presence.

Perhaps this week, before beginning your work or ending your day, take just a minute to become aware of God within you. Sit quietly. Place yourself in His presence. Repeat St. Paul’s words slowly:

“The Spirit of God dwells in me.”

Then simply remain there.

You may discover that the peace you have been searching for has been closer than you ever imagined.
