“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you” (Mt 7:12). Few teachings of Jesus are as well known as the Golden Rule. Yet it is far more demanding than simply being nice. It flows from the commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves and reflects the very heart of Christian discipleship.
Jesus is not teaching a transactional way of living—being kind only to those who are kind to us. Rather, He calls us to love as He loves: generously, patiently, and mercifully, even toward those who are difficult, unkind, or opposed to us.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus follows the Golden Rule with His teaching about the narrow gate. The connection is important. Choosing love, mercy, and forgiveness is often the harder path. The world encourages us to return hurt for hurt or simply ignore others. Christ calls us to something greater.
The narrow gate reminds us that we cannot live the Christian life on our own. We need the grace of Christ, who alone can teach our hearts to love as He loves.
