Be Not Afraid

Today’s Scripture Readings

We live in an anxious age. Many people worry about their health, finances, families, the future of our country, or the future of the Church. Turn on the television, scroll through social media, or read the headlines, and it does not take long to find something new to worry about.

Into that world Jesus speaks a remarkable command in this Sunday’s Gospel: “Do not be afraid.” In fact, He says it three times.

Why? Because our lives are not governed by chance, nor are they held together solely by our own efforts. They are held in the hands of a loving Father.

Jesus reminds us that not even a sparrow falls to the ground without the Father’s knowledge. Then He adds, “Even all the hairs of your head are counted.” God knows us. God loves us. God is with us.

Fear and anxiety can paralyze faith. They rob us of joy and peace and tempt us to believe that everything depends on us. Yet faith reminds us that while problems are real, they are not the center of our lives—God is.

This past week, after a stressful car breakdown, I found myself worrying about every possible outcome. The next morning, the words of Jesus to Martha came to mind: “You are anxious and worried about many things.” The Lord reminded me that worrying would not solve the problem, but trusting Him would bring peace.

Whatever burden you carry today, hear the words of Jesus spoken directly to you: Do not be afraid. Your Heavenly Father knows you, loves you, and will never abandon you.
