Jesus does something remarkable in today’s Gospel. He calls twelve ordinary men and entrusts them with His own mission. They are not chosen because of impressive resumes, extraordinary talents, or perfect holiness. They are chosen because they are willing to follow Him and allow Him to work through them.
That is an important reminder for us. The Lord is not simply looking for ability; He is looking for availability. He can accomplish great things through hearts that are open to Him.
The first reading offers the other side of the story. Hosea speaks of Israel’s “divided heart,” a heart pulled in many directions and unable to remain faithful to God. Before we can share Christ with others, our own hearts must first belong to Him.
The mission of every Christian is not to promote ourselves or our own ideas, but to make Jesus known. When our hearts are united with His, He will give us everything we need to accomplish the work He entrusts to us.
