Today’s first reading gives us a simple but challenging command: “Seek good and not evil, that you may live” (Amos 5:14).
At first, we may think, I’ve got that covered. We don’t consider ourselves wicked or intentionally harmful. But Scripture invites us to look deeper. Evil is not only dramatic acts of hatred or violence. It can also appear in selfishness, gossip, impatience, pride, or treating others as less than beloved children of God.
When we honestly examine our hearts, we recognize our need for ongoing conversion. We all fall short of the love to which Christ calls us.
In today’s Gospel, we see how destructive evil can be, leaving people burdened and wounded. Jesus, however, comes to bring healing and freedom. He restores what sin has damaged and gives us the grace to choose what is good.
Today, let us ask the Lord to purify our hearts, strengthen us to reject evil in all its forms, and help us seek the good so that we may truly live.
