In today’s Gospel, Jesus praises Mary for simply sitting at His feet and listening. This is a beautiful image of contemplative prayer: simply sitting at the feet of Jesus, aware of His presence and His love, and listening—not so much with our ears, but with our hearts. For a few moments, we put aside the anxieties, fears, and distractions we carry and simply allow ourselves to be in the presence of the Lord.
Psalm 139 can help us enter into this kind of prayer. The psalm reminds us that God knows us better than we know ourselves. I often give Psalm 139 as a penance because it helps us become aware of how completely the Lord knows and loves us.
Perhaps sometime today, slowly pray Psalm 139. Make its words your own. Then, when the words are finished, simply remain with the Lord. Sit at His feet, rest in His love, and listen.
