Nothing Will Separate Us
“What will separate us from the love of Christ?” (Romans 8:35)
Most of us know the answer immediately: nothing. But remembering that truth when life becomes difficult is another matter.
We become overwhelmed by responsibilities, discouraged by our failures, or burdened by worries that no one else sees. Slowly, we begin to act as though everything depends on us. Prayer slips into the background, and before long we wonder where God is.
During my retreat last week, one of the priests offered an image that has stayed with me. Before every flight, we’re told to put on our own oxygen mask before helping anyone else. It isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. If we don’t receive the oxygen first, we won’t be able to help anyone else.
The same is true in the spiritual life. We cannot give what we have not first received.
After learning of the death of John the Baptist, Jesus withdrew to a deserted place to pray. In His grief, He turned first to His Father. He teaches us to do the same.
This week, spend just five quiet minutes with the Lord each day. Let Him remind you who you are: His beloved son or daughter. Nothing—not your failures, your fears, or your burdens—can separate you from His love.
