Throughout this week the prophet Hosea has reminded us of both our weakness and God’s unfailing love. Today’s first reading includes a simple invitation: “Return to the Lord, your God.” It is not a call to earn God’s love but to receive it once again.
The Church places Psalm 51 before us today, a psalm we also pray each Friday in Morning Prayer: “Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness.” Friday has long been a day of repentance, but Christian repentance is never about becoming trapped in guilt. It is about remembering that God’s mercy is always greater than our sins.
We all experience moments when we rely more on ourselves than on the Lord. We become anxious, discouraged, or distracted, believing that everything depends on our own efforts. Hosea gently reminds us to stop placing our trust in “the work of our hands” and to place it once again in God.
Today, spend a few quiet moments praying Psalm 51 slowly. Let it become the beginning of a conversation with the Lord. Ask Him for the grace to return to Him with confidence, trusting not in your own strength but in His faithful love, which heals, forgives, and leads us forward as His beloved children.
