I had a philosophy professor in college who began each class with a short quiz. One day he asked us what was inscribed above the courthouse in downtown Worcester. The answer: “Obedience to law is justice.” Only one student knew it—an international student.
His point was simple: we can easily take for granted what is right in front of us, becoming oblivious to things we should treasure.
The same can happen with our faith.
In today’s Gospel, the crowds are amazed by Jesus and His authority. Yet it is the demon who recognizes Him and declares, “I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
We can become so accustomed to Jesus—to the Gospel, the Mass, the Eucharist—that we fail to appreciate the extraordinary gift before us.
Today, perhaps we should ask for the grace to see with fresh eyes: to recognize Jesus, treasure His presence, and allow our encounter with Him to transform our lives.
