Today’s Gospel is so familiar that we can forget how frightening the situation really was. It was dark, the wind was strong, and the apostles were struggling against the waves. Their fear was real.
Yet in the middle of the storm, Jesus comes to them saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Then something remarkable happens: Peter walks on water. An ordinary man does the impossible because Christ calls him and Peter trusts Him. But when Peter turns his attention from Jesus to the wind, fear takes over and he begins to sink.
How often do we do the same?
When our eyes are fixed on Christ, His grace enables us to forgive, persevere, serve, and face difficulties we never thought we could handle. But when our attention becomes consumed by problems, failures, anxieties, and uncertainty, we begin to sink.
Elijah reminds us today that we need quiet to recognize God’s presence. Prayer gives Christ our attention and allows Him to refocus our hearts.
The storms will come. The invitation is to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and hear Him say again: “Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid.”
