Into the Desert

Today’s Readings

The Church always begins Lent by leading us into the desert with Jesus.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus Christ is “led by the Spirit” into the desert to be tempted. The desert is not an accident — it is preparation. Before beginning His public ministry, He withdraws to rest in the Father’s love and clarify His identity as the beloved Son.

The temptations He faces — hunger, ego, and power — are not ancient relics. They are ours. When we are anxious, tired, or discouraged, those voices grow louder: seek comfort, prove yourself, take control.

Lent invites us into solitude, not loneliness — into a quiet remembering of who we are and whose we are. In the desert, Jesus stands firmly on the Word of God because He knows His identity.

The same Spirit who led Him into the desert now leads us — not to fail, but to be strengthened, purified, and prepared for the victory of Easter.
