As I write these words, the sun is just beginning to rise. When I walked into my office earlier, I had to turn on a few lamps simply to see. Without light, I would have bumped into furniture, tripped, or been unable to find what I needed. Light makes movement possible; it brings clarity and safety.
Scripture often uses light to describe God’s presence and truth. God’s light allows us to recognize Him at work in our daily lives. It helps us see ourselves as His beloved children and to recognize others as created in His image and likeness. Illuminated by His light, we are able to move through the day with confidence and to persevere through its challenges.
Like lamps, our hearts need to be connected to a source of light. Prayer, the Sacraments, and time with God’s Word are how we “turn on the power.” Too often we try to go through the day without this light—and we stumble. If we would never choose darkness for our daily tasks, why choose it for our spiritual lives?
