The Will of God Begins with Listening

Today’s Readings

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that those who do the will of God are His brother, sister, and mother. At first glance, that can sound like a call to do more—to act better, work harder, or try to prove our faith. But Jesus is pointing us somewhere deeper. Doing the will of God begins not with activity, but with relationship.

So often we reduce faith to what we accomplish. Yet actions alone are not enough to sustain love. As St. Angela Merici reminds us, “God forces no one but only indicates, calls, persuades.” God speaks gently, and the first response He desires is listening.

To do God’s will is to make space amid the noise of daily life and simply be—present, attentive, and open as beloved children of the Father. From that place of listening, love takes root. Our actions then become fruit, not pressure: loving God, loving others, and living out the identity we have already been given in Christ.
