A New Year, A New Opportunity

Today’s Readings

On this first day of a new year, many of us think about resolutions — we want to be healthier, more disciplined, more at peace. That desire to begin again is good. But the Church invites us to begin not by looking first at ourselves, but by looking at Mary, the Mother of God.

The Christian life does not start with our effort. It begins with what God does — and our willingness to receive it. Mary shows us the way: not control, but trust. Not anxiety, but surrender. She pondered God’s work in her heart, even when she did not fully understand.

Our resolutions often focus on externals. The Gospel invites us deeper: less noise, more prayer; less fear, more trust; less resentment, more forgiveness. Because of Christ, we are God’s children. This year, let our first resolution be to live like we truly belong to Him — open, trusting, and ready to say “yes,” like Mary.
