The Light that Enters Our Darkness

Today’s Readings

John’s Gospel opens with familiar words: “In the beginning…”—words that recall creation itself. Scripture tells us that the world began in darkness and chaos, and then God spoke. His Word brought light, order, and life. Christmas proclaims that God speaks once again—not from afar, but from within His creation.

The Word through whom all things were made becomes flesh. Not in power or spectacle, but quietly and humbly. God enters real circumstances: poverty, uncertainty, weariness, and longing. A new beginning is offered—not just to the world long ago, but to us today.

We know darkness in our own lives: anxiety, exhaustion, loneliness, disappointment. Christmas reminds us that this is precisely where God chooses to act. Christ does not come to condemn the darkness, but to illuminate it from within.

Christmas is not simply remembered; it is received. Where Christ is welcomed, light slowly breaks forth—and new beginnings become possible.
