Each year on December 18 and December 23, the Gospel from Luke places before us the story of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. When the angel announces that his wife Elizabeth will bear a son, Zechariah struggles to believe—and his doubt leaves him unable to speak. Today’s Gospel, however, marks a turning point. Zechariah obeys the will of God revealed to him, and in that obedience his voice is restored.
This moment carries a powerful lesson. When we resist or doubt God’s will in our lives, something within us becomes muted. We may continue going through the motions, but we do not live fully as God’s beloved sons and daughters. Freedom comes not from control, but from trust.
God’s ways are often mysterious, especially when viewed only from our limited perspective. That is why the psalmist’s prayer is so fitting today: “Teach me your ways, O Lord.” Let that be our prayer as well—that we may listen more deeply, trust more fully, and live according to His will.
