Today’s readings invite us to see the quiet but tremendous courage of St. Joseph. In his world, the expected response to Mary’s unexpected pregnancy was simple: end the engagement and walk away. Had he done so, Mary would have faced poverty, rejection, and even danger. Yet Joseph chose trust. Mary chose trust. Both placed their lives entirely in God’s hands.
The Gospel echoes Isaiah in proclaiming the truth that sustained them: “God is with us.” This is what allowed them—and later St. Paul, a “slave of Christ Jesus”—to surrender fully to God’s will.
Faith does not promise a life without struggle, but it offers a firm foundation. Many in our own community carry heavy burdens, yet their quiet heroism shines: parents caring for family, workers coming to Mass after long shifts, parishioners who give generously despite having little. Their steadfast faith radiates the peace that comes only from Christ dwelling with us.
