Keep your eyes on Christ

Today’s Readings

Today the Church invites us to reflect on the Gospel passage of Jesus walking on water. At Jesus’ invitation, Peter steps out of the boat and begins to walk toward Him. But when Peter shifts his focus from Jesus to the wind and waves, fear takes over—and he begins to sink.

What a powerful image for our own lives. Many mornings we may start focused on the Lord, feeling hopeful and at peace. Yet as the day unfolds, our attention shifts to worries, responsibilities, and the “winds and waves” around us. Anxiety creeps in, and spiritually, we begin to sink.

Jesus is with us in the storm. He tells us, “Do not be afraid.” To stay above the waves, we need to keep our eyes fixed on Him—especially in turbulent moments. Brief prayers throughout the day, a scripture reminder on our phone, or glancing at a crucifix, icon, or holy card can help refocus our hearts. These simple sacramentals are not decorations—they refocus our attention,, reminding us that Christ is always present, even in the storm.
