To Love as Jesus did

Today’s Readings

In today’s readings for the Memorial of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, the Lord gives us a profound challenge. Through St. John we hear, “Let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth” (1 Jn 3:18). Most of us agree with this in principle—but Jesus quickly shows us what it truly demands. In Luke’s Gospel He tells us: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you… Be merciful… Stop judging… Stop condemning… Forgive” (Lk 6:27–38).

Christian love is not about warm feelings or inspiring thoughts. It is the very shape of a disciple’s life. And when we honestly reflect on these commands, we recognize our own need for ongoing conversion. On our own, we cannot live this kind of radical love. Only when we open our hearts fully to Christ and allow His grace to transform us can we love as He loves—and offer the witness our world deeply needs.
