“There will be those who will say to you, ‘Look, there he is,’ or ‘Look, here he is.’ Do not run in pursuit.” (Lk 17:23)
There are moments in our spiritual journey when we sense the Lord inviting us to deeper conversion — when we recognize areas of our lives still closed to His grace. Our first instinct is often to decide what we must do: adopt new devotions, add more practices, follow the advice of an inspiring speaker, or imitate someone we consider holy. But if we are not careful, this focus on our own efforts can distract us from the One who is calling us.
Yes, we all need ongoing conversion, and the example of saints and righteous people can inspire us. But the Christian life is not a solo project. Christ founded the Church so that we could discern His voice together. Spiritual direction, small groups, and parish formation help us recognize where God is truly leading us — not to chase after every “there He is,” but to meet Him where He already dwells.
