The Narrow Gate

Today’s Readings

Jesus reminds us today that the Christian life is not always easy. Deep within, we long for God, yet the world and its ways often pull us away. We struggle to live according to His will.

In the Office of Readings, St. Clement writes to the Corinthians: “Let us put on unity of mind, thinking humble thoughts, exercising self-control, keeping ourselves far from all backbiting and slander, being righteous in deed and not in words only.” His advice is clear: “Let us be subject to His will.”

That is what makes the gate so narrow. We hesitate to discern and live God’s will because it demands change — a conversion of heart, habits, and priorities. But the Lord does not leave us alone. He gives us everything we need — the Scriptures, the Church, and the Sacraments — to guide and strengthen us.

The choice is ours as to whether we accept His gifts and allow His grace to transform our hearts.
