Prayer is something we all talk about, but many of us struggle to practice. What is prayer, really? St. John Damascene described it as “the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God.” Yet prayer is far more than asking—it’s opening our hearts to the One who loves us.
Fr. Thomas Green, SJ, called prayer “an opening of mind and heart to God,” reminding us that prayer begins not with us reaching up, but with God reaching down. True prayer requires humility—the Catechism teaches that “humility is the foundation of prayer.”
St. Thérèse of Lisieux beautifully wrote: “For me, prayer is a surge of the heart… a cry of recognition and love, embracing both trial and joy.”
In our noisy world, we need to rediscover silence. Quieting our minds allows us to encounter God’s presence and to rest in Him. Prayer isn’t only speaking—it’s learning to be still and to listen.
