Finding Peace in the Presence of Christ

Today’s Readings

We can all relate to Martha in today’s Gospel. There is so much that needs to get done. We wake up earlier, stay up later, and fill our days off—and even the Sabbath—with unfinished tasks and lingering responsibilities. Yet, despite all our effort, we rarely feel caught up. What we do manage to accomplish is usually accompanied by anxiety and worry.

When that happens, our instinct is often to double down: “This week will be different.” But no matter how hard we push, peace still escapes us.

Anxiety and worry are not Gospel values. They are not the fruit of a life lived in communion with Christ. They come instead from a focus on self—on our desire to control every detail of our lives and even the lives of others. The more anxious we become, the narrower our vision grows. We fail to recognize the presence of Christ right in front of us, we fail to see Him in others, and we slowly lose the ability to love—God, others, and even ourselves.

Today, the Lord invites us to pause and reflect on our priorities. What truly matters? What needs to change so that Christ becomes the center again? Things won’t change unless we change.

Jesus calls us to sit at His feet like Mary, to listen, to rest, and to be renewed in His love. When we make Him our priority, everything else begins to fall into its proper place. That love—quiet, steady, and strong—transforms both our hearts and the world around us.
