Monday, Feast of Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels

Today’s Readings

In today’s Office of Readings, part of the Liturgy of the Hours, we hear a homily from St. Gregory the Great for the Feast of the Archangels. St. Gregory reminds us that the word angel describes not their nature but their mission: “They are only called angels when they fulfill the mission given to them by the Lord.” Their very identity is revealed in their service and obedience to God’s will.

Isn’t the same true for us who bear the name Christian? We are truly Christians not merely by title, but when we live as disciples of Jesus. To be Christian means to live in relationship with Him, to open our hearts and minds to His grace so that we may be continually converted. It means to love our neighbor, to live His teachings, and to share both His Word and His love with others.

Today’s psalm, Psalm 138, shows us how to live this calling: “I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with all my heart.” A Christian life begins with gratitude—thanksgiving for God’s blessings, His love, and His promises. Each day is an invitation to begin with thanks, and to ask for the grace to live faithfully as His disciple, just as the angels live faithfully in their mission before the Lord.
