Patrick Lencioni once observed that fear of change isn’t our biggest problem. In fact, we often desire change—it inspires our politics, fuels New Year’s resolutions, and motivates us to make sacrifices during Lent. What we truly dread is the transition that change requires.
Transitions can be unsettling and even painful. Familiar routines are disrupted, uncertainty looms, and the comfort of the familiar is lost. They can feel messy, unpredictable, and at times, frightening.
Today’s first reading speaks of a profound transition—Joshua stepping into the leadership role long held by Moses. These were enormous shoes to fill. Naturally, the people wondered: Would Joshua be strong enough? Wise enough? Yet Moses reminds them of a simple, reassuring truth: the Lord remains with them. He is their constant anchor, the one who will steady them through uncertainty and carry them forward on their journey.
In the Gospel, Jesus reminds us that humility is essential if we are to live with this awareness of God’s presence. Humility teaches us that we cannot control everything and that our strength alone is not enough. But with the Lord as our foundation and guide, we have nothing to fear—no matter how great the change or how uncertain the transition.
