In today’s Gospel, we hear that Jesus “did not work any mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith.” Mark’s Gospel puts it even more starkly: Jesus was “unable” to perform any mighty deeds because of their unbelief (Mk 6:5–6). That may sound surprising—Jesus is the Son of God, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity. How could God be unable to do anything?
Matthew tells us that the people “took offense” at Jesus. Why? Perhaps it was jealousy. Perhaps they were unsettled or even threatened by His words. Whatever the reason, their hearts and minds were closed. They would not listen.
Any real, loving relationship begins with listening—truly hearing what the other is saying. When we listen, we are drawn deeper into relationship. The Church teaches that listening to the Word of God is the first step in living the life of faith. When we open our hearts to His Word, we open ourselves to His grace—and that grace transforms us.
The truth is simple: the only thing that can prevent God’s grace from working in our lives is us.
