Today’s Readings

The first reading presents a very familiar and dramatic scene—one many of us can vividly recall from the classic film The Ten Commandments: the Israelites dancing around the golden calf, Moses descending the mountain in righteous anger, and the dramatic moment when he shatters the stone tablets bearing the Ten Commandments.

This moment in Scripture offers a powerful and relevant lesson for us today, even in the year 2025. What idols have we allowed to take the place of God in our lives? Is it our own ego? Money? Power? Another person? A habit or substance?

Moses’ destruction of the golden calf reminds us that these idols—whatever form they take—are ultimately powerless. They may seem appealing, even comforting, but they cannot fulfill our deepest desires. At best, they distract us; at worst, they lead us away from God and into spiritual ruin. Only the Lord can offer what we truly long for: joy, love, peace of heart, and eternal happiness.

Because of His boundless love and mercy, God does not abandon us. He offers us not only forgiveness for the times we have turned away from Him, but also the grace to be restored to friendship with Him—especially through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
