In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers a prayer in which He praises the “childlike.” This refers to those who have simplicity of heart—those who approach God with trust, humility, and openness. So often, our hearts and lives become cluttered with worries, distractions, material concerns, the pursuit of power or status, and endless self-reliance. We place our ultimate hope in what we can control or understand, rather than in God.
But Jesus teaches us that true wisdom is not found in pride or self-sufficiency. It is found in simplicity—in making the Lord the center of our lives. When we live this way, we discover the path to joy, fulfillment, and true freedom.
This Gospel scene is Jesus at prayer, modeling for us how to seek that simplicity of heart. When we open our hearts and minds—especially through prayer—to deeper union with the Lord, we begin to let go of pride and receive the transforming love of God. Like the burning bush in today’s first reading, that love does not consume us, but enlivens us. It sets our faith ablaze and enables us to live each day with the fire of God’s love and joy.
