Today is the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, a celebration of the Lord’s great mercy for all of us. St. Paul writes, “God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). Jesus teaches that “there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.” (Luke 15:7). The message is simple: there are no lost causes. Jesus loves each human person and desires that everyone live in love with Him. He will continually reach out to us, even when we reject Him.
This ought to be comforting and challenging to us. Comforting in that the Lord hasn’t given up on us, regardless of how bad we think we have messed up. He offers grace, healing and restoration. St. Gregory of Nyssa wrote, “But when the shepherd had found the sheep, he did not punish it, he did not get it to the flock by driving it, but by placing it on his shoulder, and carrying it gently, he united it to his flock.”
The challenge: as disciples of Jesus Christ we are called to be instruments of His mercy towards others.
