In the book of Genesis Abram faces quite several challenges, including from the Lord. God’s plan for Abram seems to be at best quite difficult, if not impossible. Despite the challenges, the Lord invites Abram to trust in Him. We are told that “Abram put his faith in the Lord, who attributed it to him as an act of righteousness.” (Gn 15:6)
St. Paul will point to this reading from Genesis and to Abram as a model for the Christian disciple. To live in love with Christ each day, to be a Christian disciple and an instrument of the Lord isn’t easy. At times it seems to attract criticism, attack, and rejection. The difficulties aren’t just from outside of ourselves. We struggle to live in love with Christ, to put him first in our lives. This battle can wear us down and we may wonder if it is possible to live as the Lord desires us to. At these times the false prophets become appealing: to live faith, without really having to change our lives; to love without sacrifice. These messages really are the world’s messages and not from God.
Our daily time of prayer and contemplation, our study of the lives of the saints and our participation in the sacramental life of the Church keep us rooted in Christ, focused on Him and enable us to trust in His love and call even when greatly challenged.
