Today’s Readings

St. Gregory of Nyssa wrote, “The life of the Christian has three distinguishing aspects: deeds, words and thought…Each of must examine his thoughts, words and deeds to see whether they are directed toward Christ or are turned away from him.”

The Christian life is meant to be always lived in praise of God.  We can see roots of this in Old Testament where the focus is on the right worship of God. Even as we go about our tasks in the world, our thoughts, words, and deeds are meant to be directed towards the Lord.

Zechariah had lost his ability to speak because he doubted God’s plan and failed to live God’s will.  In the Gospel today he changes course and lives out God’s will which and the result is ‘Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God.” When he listens to and accepts God’s will and lives it, his life is a praise of God.

So often we doubt in our lives. We are hesitant to live God’s will because we do not trust Him. The result is we fall short of living lives of praise of God. We are mute in many respects. The world needs to hear our words of praise. The world needs to hear the Gospel proclaimed in the words and actions of Christians.  This can only happen if we trust in the Lord and live His will for us completely.
