Yesterday’s Gospel Jesus taught us how to pray with a simple heart. Today he teaches us to live this simplicity in our daily lives. ”Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal…For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” (Mt. 6:19,21)
We live in the world and as such will need to make use of material things. However, these things are meant to be a means to survival and drawing us deeper into our relationship with Christ, not an ends within themselves. Nothing we own ultimately matters. The only thing that is forever is God. The only thing that can give us meaning and purpose and the joy we seek is God.
Yes, we will own things, but they cannot consume us. If we are losing sleep and filled with anxiety about worldly matters (whether material, financial, politics, etc.), our hearts are focused on the wrong things. None of these things will bring us peace. Let our treasure be the faith and love God offers us.
