St. Paul refers to a situation facing the Corinthians where the so called ‘superapostles’ are preaching a different Gospel than the one Paul and the Apostles are preaching. It is a gospel of that seems to present an easier way and one of ‘reward’. This is a situation that still exists in our world today.
There are teachings of the Gospel that are quite challenging, that are opposed to the cultural norms we live in. It can be tempting to accept an ‘easier’ way. In fact, an easier way may seem more compassionate and loving.
At the heart of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the call to repentance, that is a return to the Lord. What does that really mean? It means living life in the image and likeness of God, the One who is perfect love. This means a commitment to continuing conversion, turning our hearts and minds continually to the Lord and letting go of ourselves as the center. This is not easy, in fact at times it can be quite painful. However, God is love, He loves each of us and does not give up on us. He is the perfect Father and full of compassion for us. As a result, he is patient with us and will give us the strength and the grace to continue to respond to His call, regardless of how difficult.
Jesus invites us to call God ‘Our Father’. There is a great comfort in that. Despite my weaknesses and failures, despite putting myself ahead of God, He still desires that I live in relationship with Him. He continues to reach out to me. Let us draw strength from this reality. Let us recognize the Lord’s outstretched arm to us and have the courage to accept His help.
