Friday, Memorial of St. Anthony of Padua

Today’s Readings

The Office of Readings today contains a sermon given by St. Anthony of Padua. He says very simply at one point, “Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak.”  A very simple message but one that would change the world if each of us lived this way.

We are quick to acknowledge and lament the problems that exist in our world, the challenges to living faith. Yet so often our actions throughout the day are no different than those we lament.  We are meant to live what we celebrate at Mass throughout the day and week.  Mass comes from the Greek word missa, meaning ‘to be sent’.

In that sermon St. Anthony also says, “We should speak, then, as the Holy Spirit gives us the gift of speech.”  We just celebrated the great Solemnity of Pentecost, the giving of the Holy Spirit to the Church.  This Spirit dwells within each of us, to give us the words to speak and to guide our actions.  This doesn’t happen without our consent.  Today let us be sure to ask the Spirit to guide our words and actions that we may live and speak the Gospel throughout the day.
