Tuesday, 10th Week in Ordinary Time

Today’s Readings

Our return to Ordinary Time following the Easter season begins this year with the Sermon on the Mount. Except for a couple of feasts, we will journey through these chapters of Matthew’s Gospel for the next three weeks.

The Sermon on the Mount describes the life of the Christian disciple, those who have been baptized into the Body of Christ. The life of the Christian disciple is lived in love with Christ.  At the same time, they have a responsibility to share this life with others.  In fact, the Gospel puts it quite bluntly today that if we don’t share our faith and love with Christ with others, our baptism and confirmation make no difference to the Church or even to ourselves. How we share this faith and love depends on our vocation in life.

St. Therese of Lisieux: “I see now that true charity consists in bearing the faults of those around us, never being surprised at their weaknesses, but edified at the least sign of virtue. I see above all that charity must not remain hidden at the bottom of our hearts: ‘nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.’ It seems to me that this lamp is the symbol of charity; it must shine out not only to cheer up those we love best but all in the house.”
