In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles today we hear of the gathering of the Apostles and presbyters to address a problem that has arisen in the early Church: what to do with the Gentiles who were being baptized into the Christian Church. This gathering is often called the ‘Council of Jerusalem’. Throughout the Church’s history when faced with a problem or challenge the Bishops of the world will gather with other members of the faithful to pray, discern and discuss the problem in light of the Word of God and the Sacred Tradition, discerning from these sources of Revelation God’s will.
In our own lives we often are faced with challenges and decisions that need to be made. Some of these are life changing, others are on a smaller level. As Christians we are not alone-we are part of the Body of Christ, the Family of Faith. While we won’t call a Church Council, we do gather with other members of the Body of Christ, our family members and those who know us best. We need to also include the One who knows us best: the Lord. We need to listen to our family and friends, but also to pray with them and take time to discern what God’s will is for us.
