Thursday in the Octave of Easter

Today’s Gospel passage begins with a summary of the account of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus from yesterday. Filled with grief, lost dreams and confusion blinds them recognizing Jesus (a theme this week). Ultimately, it is a moment of prayer, of giving thanks to God and the celebration of the Eucharist (the early Christians called the Mass the ‘breaking of the bread’) that healed their hearts and opened their eyes. This is why the Church has called the Eucharist the source and summit of the Christian life. It unites us to Christ, nourishes and strengthens faith and provides the healing of heart that we need to have our eyes opened. Then we are able to see the presence of Christ in our midst.
