We need to look at Jesus’ example in the Gospel: 2 disciples are running away. Bishop Barron has observed that they are going the wrong way. Everything in Luke’s Gospel leads to Jerusalem. Because of fear, sadness and loss, these two are going the opposite way. When Jesus encounters them he walks with them—in the wrong direction. He doesn’t yell at them, mock them or ignore them. He engages in conversation with them, sharing reflections from the Scriptures and his own teachings. This creates a sense of joy and enthusiasm and an awakening of faith that enables the two disciples to recognize Jesus and to turn around. We are called to follow Jesus example: meet people where they are, and engage them with patience and love.
